LABOR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
MEETING HELD 4TH JUNE, 1998 IN THE
TRADES HALL AUDITORIUM
AT 4 GOULBURN STREET, SYDNEY, AT 6.05 P.M.
PRESENT:- P. Sams (Secretary), M. Costa (Assistant Secretary), M. Lennon, N. Steer,
J. Robertson (Executive Officers).

EXECUTIVE BUSINESS
CORRESPONDENCE:
1. From the Australian Services Union, NSW & ACT Services Branch - concerning the New South Wales Youth Advisory Council, and advising it was essential that the views and concerns of young workers be represented on this Council. The Union requested that Labor Council advise all affiliates, and its Youth Committee, that nominations to the New South Wales Youth Advisory Council were being sought and that appropriate nominations from young unionists should be put forward.
Com. Sams moved Executive Recommendation:-
"That the correspondence be received and affiliates be encouraged to nominate appropriate young officers or members to the New South Wales Youth Advisory Council."
Com. A. Peters seconded.

2. From the Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation - advising that, as a broad coalition of organisations and individuals who support a strengthening of the process between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians through support for indigenous native title rights, it was promoting a Citizen's Statement on Native Title. It hoped to collect 250,000 signatures by mid-year and requested Labor Council's endorsement of the Citizen's Statement in trade union journals so that it could reach all trade union members.
Com. Sams moved Executive Recommendation:-
"That the correspondence be received and Labor Council endorse the ANTR campaign and affiliates be encouraged to publicise the material in their journals and support the citizens statement."
Com. J. Lemaire seconded.

REPORTS:-
1. ACTU EXECUTIVE MEETING
The Secretary, Com. P. Sams, reported on the recent ACTU Executive Meeting at which Assistant Secretary, Com. M. Costa, had been in attendance. Issues canvassed included the holding of the next ACTU Congress in Wollongong in the year 2000, consideration of developments in the MUA dispute, the union movement's response to the tax debate and issues to be considered by affiliates in respect to protecting members' job security. He said that a copy of the decisions would be circulated to all affiliates.

2. STATE WAGE CASE
The Secretary, Com. P. Sams, reported that, as predicted last week, the State Wage Case decision had been handed down yesterday with few surprises. He particularly welcomed the speedy consideration of the decision, this being the first state to flow on the Federal Safety Net Adjustments to its State award system. Access to the adjustments and increases in allowances were now available upon application and affiliates are encouraged to keep their State awards up to date and relevant.
