General Overview

An exceptional opportunity is available for a self-starter who is interested in taking a lead role in the public relations and communications activities of one of Australia’s most effective, respected and influential trade unions, the Maritime Union of Australia.

Job Description

Based in Sydney and working throughout Australia, the role reports to the National Communications and Campaigns Director, and works closely with the MUA’s National Officials. The scope of the role is interesting and varied with responsibilities including, but not limited to :
> Implementing the public relations strategies for the MUA as well as the National Secretary’s role as President for the International Transport Workers’ Federation
> Acting as media liaison
> Researching and preparing media releases and media briefing packs
> Managing the publication of the MUA’s Journal
> Managing the MUA’s online presence

Essential Experience and Qualifications

To be considered for this role, it is essential that you will have :
> demonstrated cross-media experience
> relevant tertiary qualifications
> excellent written and verbal communications skills
> superior analytical and investigative skills
> ability to comprehend complex issues / policy and distill into campaigns
> ability to be proactive, work independently and within tight deadlines
> ability to make decisions appropriately
> willingness to work as a member of a team
> organized approach to the work
> advanced level of computer literacy

Applicants must be permanent residents and able to work in Australia.

In addition, it is preferable that you :
> are supportive of Labor Movement and its goals national and internationally
> possess an interest in and an awareness of international, regional and national industrial relations matters
> possess an interest in and an awareness of current Union issues, objectives and priorities
> are politically astute and able to read political trends
> are a strategic and lateral thinker


A competitive remuneration package will be offered to the successful candidate commensurate with experience.
