18 September 2001 Circular To: All AffiliatesRE: Visit by Malaysian Activist
Dear Colleague,
A meeting of affiliates will be held at 1.00pm on Monday, 24th September, in the Executive Board Room, Level 9, 377 Sussex Street, Sydney, to hear from Mabel Au Mei Po, who is currently visiting Australia. Mabel is currently the Program Co-ordinator of the Committee for Asian Women, based in Bangkok, and is an active member of the anti-ISA movement. The ISA (Internal Security Act) is a colonial era law in Malaysia that allows detention without trial by the Police under the authority of the Home Minister. The ISA allows the police to interrogate detainees prior to charging them in a court of law. In the past detainees have been subject to beatings, sexual harassment and other forms of torture to obtain "confessions". Mabel, who is in Australia to speak at the TNC Globalisation Conference, wishes to meet with Australian unionists to talk about the situation in Malaysia and how we can assist those who are seeking the removal of the ISA. I trust that your union will be represented at the meeting.
Yours fraternally
Alison Peters Deputy Assistant Secretary, Community Affairs
